Three New Derby Contenders Emerge!
This past weekend saw three Kentucky Derby prep races go off, and with that we now have three new contenders on the Derby trail. Only two races remain in the prep season and then the schedule starts awarding more points for finishes in the top four. The leader board is crowded once you get past the top two horses, Goldencents and Shanghai Bobby, with Oxbow checking in at third with 11 points and 12 colts behind him who have 10 points each. Since November, John Terranova’s Falling Sky has run three times with wins in an allowance race and his maiden outing. For the first time he went more than 6 ½ furlongs and had no trouble with the distance in the Sam F. Davis Stakes as he led from start to finish, holding off a surge by Dynamic Sky to take the Grade III affair and earn his 10 points in the Derby Championship Series. It looks like the Tampa Bay Derby may be next on tap for Falling Sky on March 9th. For the fifth time in 17 Derby Prep races a Todd Pletcher trained colt has crossed the wire a winner. Revolutionary is the latest Derby hopeful to emerge from Pletcher’s care taking the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday. This was the first stakes contest for Revolutionary and by no means was it an easy win. Despite being the favorite at post time, colt had to fight from the back of the field to claim victory at the finish line as he split the leaders, Escapefromreality and Siete de Oros late in the final furlong. Another top trainer, Bob Baffert, enjoyed his second win of the prep schedule as Flashback, ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, looked strong in a small field winning the Grade II Robert. B. Lewis Stakes handily. Revolutionary’s next start is likely to come on March 2nd in the Gotham Stakes, while Flashback is probably headed for the San Felipe Stakes.
