The rough 2012 campaign has gotten quite a bit of attention from around the horse racing world as well as right here at DerbyDeals.com. Injuries and illness cut into the star quality of what seemed likely to be a terrific three-year-old season. Union Rags, I’ll Have Another, Bodemeister, and others succumbed to the bitter dangers of racing at the highest levels. Two horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby, but had disappointing finishes, were El Padrino and Take Charge Indy and it’s a real pleasure to report that they are continuing their racing careers.
El Padrino won the Risen Star Stakes and finished fourth in the Florida Derby and those finishes had him being discussed as a horse to watch for the Kentucky Derby. Todd Pletcher’s colt has a fine pedigree and was hitting the dirt at Churchill Downs with Rafael Bejarano on board, adding to his potential for a win. El Padrino couldn’t get it done though as he finished well behind the leaders with a 13th place showing that was disappointing for his training staff. He was shelved and rested for most of the 2012 spring and summer season, but resumed his training and made enough of a show to be put back on the track. El Padrino ran second at Gulfstream Park on December 19th to Citrus Kid and looks to resume a successful career.
We’ve talked about the return of Take Charge Indy earlier in the fall and now it seems as though he will continue his career as a four-year-old in 2014. After being treated for and recovering from an ankle injury, Take Charge Indy has finished third and second in his two “come back” races. Most recently, he ran second to Shackleford in the Clark Handicap in Louisville, inspiring hopes that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the foreseeable future. His next race is tabbed to be the Grade I Donn Handicap, which takes place in February.
We look forward to what lies ahead with the 2014 Kentucky Derby Prep Season and Championship Series, but DerbyDeals.com will continue to keep you informed on how these horses and other past Derby horses perform in the coming months and years.
