From the Standard-Examiner, AP Gary Graves
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — D. Wayne Lukas won’t mind working overtime for the Kentucky Derby if it fulfills a friend’s dream.

Especially one who’s a fellow Hall of Famer — Paul Hornung.

A Louisville native, Hornung sold programs at Churchill Downs as a youth. Now he co-owns Titletown Five with former Green Bay Packers teammate and defensive end Willie Davis. Hornung is hoping Lukas, one of the most successful trainers in racing, can get Titletown Five into the May 4 Kentucky Derby by winning Saturday night’s $175,000 Grade 3 Derby Trial.

The 1-mile feature race highlights opening night of the 38-date spring meet at the historic track that hosts next weekend’s Kentucky Oaks and 139th Derby. Lukas also trains Derby entrants Oxbow and Will Take Charge, and will run Derby Trial hopeful Tour Guide.

“He’s got a real long background in the Derby and it means so much to him,” Lukas said Friday of Hornung’s interest in the first jewel of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. “So, it’d be wonderful. Even if we actually don’t win it but are in it, it would mean a lot to him.”

The Trial is the final chance to make the Kentucky Derby field and awards 20 points to the winner. That could be enough to earn one of the final spots in the field that is capped at 20 horses.

Titletown Five — named by Wisconsin native Lukas in recognition of Green Bay’s unofficial nickname, Hornung’s jersey number and the Packers’ five Super Bowl appearances — has no points but has a first, second and third-place finish in six career starts. Ninth in last month’s Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, he will start the Derby Trial from the No. 9 far position and is listed at 5-1 odds.

The strong possibility of making the Derby clearly excites Hornung, who would rank it above winning four NFL championships including the first Super Bowl with the Vince Lombardi-led Packers in the 1960s.

“It’d be the greatest thing that ever happened to me in sports,” said Hornung, 77. “I’ve only had about three or four horses and had pretty good luck with three or four I had. … I can’t believe that I was thinking about what I’m going to do about (Derby) tickets.

“I’m going to go ahead and let them rob me and buy one of those big rooms.”

Several challengers are poised to thwart Hornung’s dream, including morning line favorite Zee Bros (5-2), trained by Bob Baffert.

Todd Pletcher meanwhile could face more decision-making if Forty Tales (3-1) or Capo Bastone (5-1) win. He already has three of the top six points earners in Derby co-favorite Verrazano, Revolutionary and Overanalyze, and three more qualifiers in Palace Malice, Charming Kitten and Winning Cause.

Still unsure if he’ll run Winning Cause in the Derby, Pletcher could have another decision on how the May 4 field will look though he’s not looking at it as a Derby prep for either horse.

Pletcher is stretching sprinter Forty Tales to a mile for the first time and considers Capo Bastone a better horse than he showed in finishing ninth in last month’s Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park.

“I think it’s an interesting race,” Pletcher said. “Hopefully there’s a quick pace up front for both horses.”

At the very least, the Trial may have more impact than it has in recent years. The last horse to come back and run in the Derby was Don’t Get Mad, who finished fourth in 2005.

For Hornung, it could mean the realization of a dream that Lukas believes can happen with Titletown Five.

“We gotta win the … thing, you can’t mail that thing in,” said Lukas, who has trained four Derby champions. “That’s a tough race tomorrow night. There’s four or five horses that I have great respect for. But I think we drew beautifully, that was the best possible draw and we’re taking a … nice colt over there. He’s OK.”

Derby notes: Falling Sky (59.60) and Vyjack (1:00.40) both breezed five furlongs on Friday morning. … Weekend forecasts of rain have led Pletcher to move workouts for five of his six horses up from Sunday to Saturday. Winning Cause will not work until Sunday or Monday. … Mylute and Black Onyx will also work on Saturday, with Java’s War and Frac Daddy possible. … Goldencents is scheduled to arrive Saturday from California after working six furlongs in 1:16.20 at Santa Anita on Thursday.

The Kentucky Derby is known around the world as the “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” but the
Kentucky Oaks Race also holds a special place in people’s heart, especially in the Bluegrass State.

While the Kentucky Derby is always on the first Saturday in May, the Kentucky Oaks is always run on Friday. Originally run in 1875, this Grade 1 Stakes race is for 3 year old thoroughbred fillies and covers 1 1/8 miles. The official flower for the race is the beautiful Stargazer Lily and the winner receives a $600,000 purse and is presented with a garland of the Lilies as well as the Silver Kentucky Oaks Trophy. While the Kentucky Derby has become known as the “Run for the Roses”, the Kentucky Oaks is known as the “Lillies for the Fillies.”

Decades ago, the race became popular with locals in the area, due to smaller crowds than the Derby. However, over the years it has grown to be one of the most popular horse racing events in the United States, with over 100,000 people in attendance—both locals and visitors alike. It is the second most attended racing day in North America. Schools and most businesses in the Louisville area are closed on Oaks Day and it is considered a holiday!

Fashion plays a key role for the Kentucky Derby and the same hold true for the Kentucky Oaks race. The official color for the Oaks race is Pink, in honor of the Stargazer Lily. Pink is THE color to be in on this special day, whether it be a hat, handkerchief, sundress or suit. Men and women alike sport this pastel hue to also honor Cancer survivors. Each year, Churchill Downs reaches out to cancer survivors and invites them to be a part of a “survivor parade” to show support for their fight and to find a cure for this deadly disease. Over a hundred survivors in Pink walk the track to the roaring cheers of the crowd.

Many other traditions abound on Kentucky Oaks Day. Race goers often attend an Oaks Brunch before the race, typically featuring Mint Julep drinks, Mimosas and an assortment of Benedictine sandwiches or Country Ham and Biscuits. Locals know it is very important to eat a good meal to start the day off right before heading to the track, as it can be very difficult to get a dinner reservation after the races. DerbyDeals.com can assist their guests with top-notch reservations at the city’s best restaurants—and Louisville is known for its great selections, having been recognized in many gourmet magazines as a “foodie” town.

Oaks night is also the night for the best parties! High Society, athletes, musicians and celebrities alike enjoy Southern Hospitality at over-the-top charity events such as the Barnstable Brown Party, held in a stunning mansion in a historic Louisville neighborhood. This sold-out event is one of the hardest invites to get. Long evening gowns and tuxedos sparkle under twinkly lights as guests mingle and discuss their favorite horses. Butlers roam the grounds serving cocktails and champagne…it is not unusual to see guests talking to high profile people such as Kid Rock, or the Governor of Kentucky. Many people in Kentucky consider this to be the best party of the year and out of town guests agree- this is one event worth attending. Party tickets to events such as the Barnstable Brown Party can be almost impossible to obtain, but DerbyDeals.com can get you access for a night you will never forget.

So now the secret is definitely out—come enjoy the Kentucky Oaks race as the “locals” do, and be a part of a growing tradition that culminates in a spectacular weekend of racing.

The Kentucky Derby is not only a major sporting event, it is also a major fashion event. Southerners take their Spring outfits and traditions seriously and that is especially true at Derby time. When it comes to the Kentucky Oaks and Derby, bright and bold is best.

Part of the storied tradition at Churchill Downs is viewing beautiful women in large, oversized hats accompanied by their dates in color-coordinated ties or vests. Crisp, clean suits and flowing dresses are the norm regardless of wind, rain or sleet. However, while dressing up is an important key element of the Kentucky Derby experience, it is also crucial to be comfortable and mix fashion with function. The following tips can help you make the most of your days at the track while looking your best for the Kentucky Oaks and Derby!

Outfit Decisions: This Derby, think big color and strong patterns for both ladies and gentlemen. Gentlemen often wear light fabric suits with a festive, bright tie. Seersucker in grey or navy is a classic look for men, paired with pastel accessories such as a tie, vest or handkerchief. Bowties are also very popular at the track. During Derby, it is not unusual to see men proudly wearing garish checkered or plaid pants or a green blazer with horses on it! Classic, preppy looks with a twist will put you on the right fashion track whether you are in the Infield, Grandstand or the Clubhouse. If a suit is not your style, opt for pressed Khakis with a button down or a polo shirt with a navy blazer to top off the look.

Ladies at the track always wear a hat! Large brimmed and theatrical with flowers or feathers, bigger is always better when it comes to making a fashion statement on Kentucky Oaks and Derby Day. If a huge hat is too much for you, then a delicate Fascinator is a beautiful alternative. “Hat hair” is a harsh reality, so loose curls or a ponytail works best to look fresh throughout the day. Typically, a nice sundress with pretty details is most popular, but this year A- line dresses or skirts paired with matching, fitted blazers will be in vogue.

Elegant vs. Funky: While for most, the Kentucky Derby is an elegant affair, some choose to express themselves in a whimsical way and nothing is out of the ordinary at Derby. Some crazy and fun outfits you may see can include feather boas, homemade hats that are replicates of the Twin Spires, disco suits…anything goes!

Shoes: The importance of comfortable shoes cannot be overstated! The track at Churchill Downs is partially old brick and cobblestone, not best suited for stilettos or new loafers. Parking is sometimes in a neighbor’s uneven grassy or muddy yard…be prepared! Seasoned Derby fans attending the race know to make parking plans ahead of time to avoid long treks from parts unknown. The best option is to arrange for DerbyDeals.com private parking, which places you close to track entrances, saving you time and precious effort. In addition, you will be doing some walking even if seated in the best areas. The key is to wear something that has proven to be comfortable in the past without sacrificing too much style. For women, a wedge is a great option as well as a chunky heel. Some veteran Derby-goers will bring flip flops or flats in their purse for later in the day. Pity the poor girl going barefoot with her expensive heels in hand. For men, a classic comfy loafer worn with socks is best.

Ponchos: No umbrellas are allowed in Churchill Downs but the race goes on rain, shine, hail or snow. There is a saying in Kentucky: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes.” Be ready for the changing weather by obtaining a clear poncho ahead of time and popping it into a purse or bag…the clear plastic allows for your outfit to shine through while you stay dry and look fabulous.

Lastly, bring essentials like Kleenex, lip balm, sunscreen, a hair elastic and a safety pin for unexpected issues. Pieces of candy, gum or mints will help you out during long drink lines. Also, do not forget to bring a pen to mark up your program with your favorite picks.

The Kentucky Derby is a magical event like no other, full of tradition and pageantry. With the right preparation and a bit of personal style, you will have one of the best experiences of your life to remember and share for years to come.

D. Wayne Lukas has to feel pretty good about his two Kentucky Derby hopefuls after they finished first and second in the Rebel Stakes this past weekend at Oaklawn Park. Will Take Charge bolted his way to the top of the Kentucky Derby point standings with a strong finish, as he nipped stable mate Oxbow at the wire.

Bob Baffert’s Super Ninety-Nine broke from the gate a 6-5 favorite and for the first half of the race settled in behind Title Contender, who set the early pace. Before the top the turn, Super Ninety-Nine made a move on the leader and pushed ahead, with a pack of three stalking the leaders. At the top of the stretch, Super Ninety-Nine, Oxbow, and Den’s Legacy put some distance between themselves and the field. Oxbow and Den’s Legacy continue to push ahead, leaving Super Ninety-Nine who was tiring, while Will Take Charge was making a ferocious move from the outside. Oxbow looked like the winner, but was overtaken by Will Take Charge, who led for all of 10 yards in the race, but that was enough to earn 50 more points towards the Derby Championship Series Standings. Oxbow finished a strong second with Den’s Legacy crossing the wire third.

The victory puts Will Take Charge on top of the Derby Standings with 60 total points, and Oxbow improved his position by moving to 36 points. Will Take Charge has won two of his last three starts, including a victory in the Smarty Jones Stakes, with a sixth place finish in the Southwest Stakes sandwiched between the victories. Lukas has to be pleased with the progress of his colts moving forward as both have proven that they are up to the distance and competition. Will Take Charge could be headed to the Bluegrass Stakes as his final Kentucky Derby tune up, with Oxbow staying at Oaklawn to run in the Arkansas Derby.

Verrazano may be the brightest rising star in Todd Pletcher’s ample stable of Kentucky Derby hopefuls. He has been highly touted by racing fans and writers since his February allowance race at Gulfstream Park, where he destroyed the competition over a mile distance. This weekend, he took to the dirt in the Tampa Bay Derby and solidified his position as a top Triple Crown contender.

The Tampa Bay Derby was the first graded stakes contest for Verrazano, who was undefeated in two starts coming into the race. He entered the starting gate a big 2-5 favorite and could have been a major disappointment right from the start. As the gates opened, he stumbled, but recovered quickly
with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez aboard. After his recovery he moved to the front, but yielded to Falling Sky who moved from the outside to run along the rail as Verrazano staked out the middle without being pushed. At half a mile, Falling Sky led, with Verrazano and Dynamic Sky just behind. On the turn, Falling Sky was fighting to keep his lead, but didn’t have enough to maintain his lead as Verrazano pulled past and away from him. Meanwhile, Java’s War was making up ground fast and down the stretch overtook Falling Sky and pursued the leader. Despite the tremendous rally from Java’s War, Verrazano was the class of the field and took the Tampa Bay Derby by three lengths without really being pushed. Java’s War was second, and Falling Sky finished seven lengths off the lead in third.

Pletcher was noticeably impressed by his colt’s performance following the race; “It was a good performance. He is a lot like his sire (More Than Ready); he has a great disposition and a great mind. You always worry about the variables—his first time shipping to a new place, the first time around two turns, the first time in a stakes. So we had a lot of variables he hadn’t seen before and he seemed to handle them real well.” {1}

The victory all but assures Verrazano a place in the Kentucky Derby, as he nabs 50 big points in the Derby Championship Standings. Following the race Pletcher was keeping his options open about where to run Verrazano next, which would likely be his final tune up before making his way to Louisville for the Derby. Possible destinations for him are the Arkansas Derby and Wood Memorial, but this win gives his training staff a lot of options moving forward.

Hear the Ghost wasn’t a name that very many racing fans would be familiar with on Saturday morning, but everyone would know who he was on Saturday night. Making only his third career start and ranked near the bottom of the Horse Racing Nation Top 50 Derby contenders, he literally came out of nowhere to win the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita race track, shaking up the west coast three-year-old division.

When the gates flew open in the eight horse, 1 1/16th mile affair, favorite Goldencents made an early push for the lead along with Salutos Amigos, but gave way to the speedster early before moving with Flashback around the start of the first stretch to take over the race. Goldencents, who is Doug O’Neill’s top Derby contender this spring looked sharp early, as did Bob Baffert’s Flashback, and those two were seemingly turning the race into a two horse contest; a move that would come back to haunt them in the final furlong.

At the top of the stretch, Flashback and Goldencents had moved away from the field showing off their speed as they went nose to nose. As they were battling and starting to tire Hear the Ghost and Tiz a Minister put on a late burst of speed and challenged the obviously fading front runners. Flashback was able to put away and outlast Goldencents, but he didn’t have the juice left to hold off Hear the Ghost, as the Jerry Hollendorfer thoroughbred surged into the lead at just the right time to take the victory and earn 50 points in the Kentucky Derby Championship Series, which will likely earn him a trip to Louisville for the first Saturday in May. Flashback managed to salvage second place, Tiz the Minister took third, and Goldencents finished fourth as he ran out of gas.

Jockey Corey Nakatani is confident in Hear the Ghost and believes he is only going to improve from here; “He gets in that high cruising speed, and he just kind of cruises along, you don’t have to ask him, you don’t have to even move on him. He’s a little seasoned horse. He’s gotten better each time that I’ve been able to do something with him.” {1}

We are likely to see each of these horses again in what would promise to be an outstanding rematch in the Santa Anita Derby on April 6th. Continue to follow the Derby Trail with DerbyDeals.com, as we’ll be with you every step of the way.
